The red fox may look like a small dog but its build
is much lighter. Among other things it has lighter limb bones and a stomach half
the size of a dog of the same build. Because of its smaller stomach it must eat
often. When it catches prey it often hides some of it in one of many small
caches, buried just
enough to hide it from thieves but not so deep that it cannot be found by the
one who hid it. It usually leaves only a small amount of food in each cache so
that it can't lose it all in one blow should someone find his secret storehouse.
While some of it does get stolen, and some caches are never found again, overall
the red fox has a great memory when it comes to remembering where his food is
hiding.
