Adult common loons prefer fish to any other food. They are especially fond of perch, suckers, catfish, sunfish and minnows. They will also eat crayfish, frogs, snails, salamanders and leeches. They can dive 80 meters when chasing their prey and stay underwater for up to a minute. Many of their bones are solid instead of hollow like other birds: this helps them to dive better.
