The ruffed grouse feeds on the buds, leaves, and twigs of the poplar and birch trees.  Young grouse also enjoy the taste of flowers, clover, soft leaves and berries.  The hen will sit motionless on her nest protecting her eggs almost until she is touched. She only leaves the nest at dusk and twilight to feed when the eggs are harder to see.
