The black-capped chickadee is a welcome sight in winter in northern Ontario. It's always a joy to step outside and hear him singing even though the night has been so cold. He leads a stable sort of life. He is faithful to one mate 'as long as they both shall live'. The pair finds a territory to call their own and remain on or near it their whole lives.
He eats a wide variety of foods for such a little guy. He lives on insects, caterpillars, spiders, insect and spider eggs, weed seeds and wild fruit such as blueberries and pin cherries. In winter he hides his food away in caches. He has a surprisingly good memory, remembering his hiding places for up to a month.
